| Two Newaygo County high
school student leaders recently recounted their experiences in a
Rotary project with Fremont Rotarians. Amanda Ruthven of Fremont, and
Trisha Prickett of Grant, participated in the annual Rotary Life
Leadership training session this summer at the Kettunen Center near
Cadillac.
Ruthven is the President of the
Fremont High School National Honor Society and a Representative on
Student Council. Ruthven expressed her delight at the caliber of the
conference presenters ,
“I’ve never been in a room with so many people dedicated to
improving the lives of young people. I was impressed by the commitment
of Rotary to students.”
Rotarians across the globe sponsor
students to attend leadership training sessions in their own areas.
Kettunen Center is the longest-running, on-going Life Leadership camp
worldwide. Over 150 students attended this past summer’s training in
Cadillac.
“If I could go again, I would. It
really helped develop my own leadership skills and showed me how to
help others develop theirs,” noted Prickett. Trisha is the President
of her Senior Class in Grant, as well as a member of the Student
Council there.
The Life Leadership training includes
the international students visiting in the district. Students learn
that being a team player is as important as being a leader.
Friendships formed this summer with other student leaders attending
the training have continued into the school year.
Ruthven is planning a career in
International Relations, and Prickett plans to study Pre-Med with an
emphasis in Pediatric Oncology. |
